While the Porsche 964 model was unquestionably a faster, more refined car than the Carrera 3.2L it replaced in 1989, the newest 911 received a tepid welcome from many of the Porsche enthusiasts. The traditionalists disliked the car's heavy looking bumpers and saw it as a 911 that appealed more to status seekers than driving enthusiasts. Porsche totally fixed that second complaint in 1993 when it unveiled the RS America.
The name says it all: a Renn (Race) Sport for USA consumption. Lighter, louder, and decidedly sportier than the Carrera 2 it was based on. The modifications included a fixed rear spoiler, cloth fitted sport seats with increased side bolster, lightweight door panels and carpeting, deletion of rear seats and sound deadening, Also deleted was the standard C2 power steering which saved 15 pounds! Also included in the RS model was the track tuned M030 sport suspension which totally transformed the normal production car to a lightweight and track type handling car.
The enthusiasts and the press loved the car. Only 701 units were made and for USA only. Sports Car International magazine called the RS America "a Porsche like Porsche used to build, like die-hards used to buy". Excellence Magazine journalist David Colman described it as having "a fundamental honest and clarity of purpose that returns this manufacturer to its racing roots".
The car on offer here was delivered new to Valley Auto World Porsche in Fayetteville, NC with the best two options offered of Limited Slip and Air Conditioning. A Porsche RS America correct radio was added by the last owner which can be removed if so desired. Red seat belts were also ordered and the car remains 100% stock with magnificent paint and interior. The past owner took his car to Jerry Woods Enterprises in December of 2012 and had the car completely serviced, so the car is in need of absolutely nothing cosmetically or mechanically. This car currently has 19,932 miles.
Needless to say the RS Americas are highly sought after today by the true collector and enthusiast who want limited production cars and those that have performance driven factory built modifications. Many of these cars have high mileage or rough lives whereas this car shows as new today and is ready for concours, street or spirited driving.
